Chapter

Twenty Three

Ophelia’s eyes flew open. The dim rays of dawn illuminating the gauzy canopy above her bed. A twinge pulsed behind her eyes as she attempted to process the overload of information she’d just received. Her mind raced from one thought to another then back again, blurring the details she struggled to hold onto.

One fact, though, stuck to the forefront of her mind clear as day, shaking her down to her core and gnawing at her nerves; Pyotr the Land Vilicus, the one who sought to kill her in her dreams and who was bent on wiping mankind from the land, was sealed in the Lupos Mountains.

Pyotr was just a day’s journey from her home. Then there was the Central Valley.

All of Ophelia’s nightmares had taken place in the Central Valley, which explained why her surroundings had always seemed so familiar. When Pyotr emerges from his seal, he will return to the Central Valley. Her stomach turned at the thought.

She laid there for a while, brows knitted together, staring blankly at the thin gossamer fabric above her. The sound of pouring water and shuffling feet jostled her from her thoughts; Nell had already arrived.

“Did you have another nightmare, ma’am?” Nell asked, noticing the wrinkle in Ophelia’s brow as she laid awake in her bed.

“Not exactly, but I need to speak with Master Gaius,” Ophelia replied as she sat up. A knock then came to the door and Nell answered to find Elliot waiting on the other side.

“Lord Barnham is here to see you before he returns to Hargrave, ma’am.”

Ophelia jumped up and threw on the dress Nell had set out for her.

“Your hair!”

“It’s fine,” Ophelia replied and slid out the door to find Elliot patiently leaning against the wall, waiting for her.

“Sorry to keep you waiting.” She strode towards him. “You’re up early.”

“Not at all. Did I wake you?” he asked, taking her hands when she reached him.

She shook her head. “No, I woke up just before you knocked.”

“I can tell,” he chuckled, swiping his thumbs under her eyes.

“Do I look terribly unpresentable?”

“Not at all,” he smiled as he placed a kiss to her forehead. “I find your sleepy face rather…sweet.”

Ophelia hummed and laid her head on his chest, wrapping her arms around his waist. “I’m glad you’re here. I had another dream.”

“Did it frighten you?” he asked, sliding his arms around her back.

She didn’t respond right away, not sure of the answer herself. “I don’t know,” she finally said. “I saw Ezra again and learned a great deal of new information. Much of it wasn’t pleasant. Will you accompany me to visit Gaius, or must you leave for Hargrave straight away?”

“Hargrave can wait,” he said then escorted her and Nell to Gaius’ study.

She was quiet as they walked, her forehead wrinkled with thought. He took her hand and held it lightly, a gentle reminder he was there, offering her any sort of comfort he could. She squeezed his fingers in return.

Once they arrived, they found Gaius at his desk sifting through the old prophecy parchments they had seen before.
